MAGS builds field to remember a special player.

During his first year a league president, Larry Matko came up with the idea of approaching Mars Boro about renovating the Mars Boro Park and Skating Rink to include a softball that would be used by the MAGS Instructional Division.  MAGS would fund the renovations and would have exclusive use of the field for Instructional Division practice and games and Mars would have a newly renovated park.  The Mars Boro Council accepted the proposal and the league started making plans to build the field. 

Larry approached Ken and Coreen Bahney about his idea of naming the field after Syd and they agreed.  Since the field would bear Syd's name, the Bahney family was consulted through out the developement.  The field would be built the way Syd would have wanted.   

Syd and her dad enjoyed planting flowers together.  It was decided that the field would have a flower garden in center field surrounding the sign naming the field and Ken was asked to design and plant the flower bed.  He graciously agreed.  Syd also loved wind chimes.  What better place for wind chimes than on the foul poles in the outfield.  The field had to be something special so the league decided on a grass infield to maintain the beauty of the field.  The field would rival PNC Park!

Any project this size requires a significant amount of funding.  Each year the Bahney family and MAGS hold a golf outing in Syd's memory.  Proceeds from the outing would provide part of the funding.  League members and friends provided countless hours of their time and energy to construct the field.  Local buisness were approached for donations, MARS Boro contributed new lights, and others contributed monetary donations.  Things are shaping up.

Many thanks to Ken and Coreen and their family for allowing us to keep Syd's memory with us.  Syd was a player in our league who passed away in December 2002 at the age of 9.
